The Kenyan Senate has initiated a formal investigation into a series of alleged enforced disappearances of young fishermen around Lake Nakuru, following petitions from affected families and human rights organizations.
The probe was prompted by the cases of 33-year-old Brian Odhiambo and 21-year-old Brian Stingo, both of whom vanished under suspicious circumstances. Odhiambo was reportedly arrested by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers on January 18, 2025, for allegedly trespassing into the protected Lake Nakuru National Park. His family claims he was taken from his residence in Manyani Estate and has not been seen since.
Stingo disappeared in July 2022 during a fishing expedition with friends. His body has never been recovered.
The disappearances have sparked widespread protests in Nakuru, with residents demanding accountability from KWS. Demonstrations escalated in March 2025, leading to clashes with police and the hospitalization of several students due to tear gas exposure.

In response to public pressure, six KWS officers were arrested and charged in May 2025 with the abduction of Odhiambo. They pleaded not guilty and are currently awaiting trial.
Human rights group Vocal Africa has petitioned the Senate to form a special committee to investigate the disappearances and alleged human rights violations by KWS officers. The petition was received by Senators Okiya Omtatah (Busia), Dan Maanzo (Makueni), and Faki Mohamed (Mombasa).
KWS has acknowledged the issue of illegal fishing in Lake Nakuru, citing it as a threat to both human safety and wildlife conservation. In May 2025, a multi-agency team arrested 44 individuals for illegal fishing activities in the lake.
The Senate’s investigation aims to uncover the truth behind the disappearances and ensure justice for the affected families. The committee is expected to summon relevant authorities and stakeholders as part of its inquiry.
As the probe unfolds, families of the missing fishermen continue to seek closure, hoping that the Senate’s intervention will shed light on the fate of their loved ones.
