President William Ruto on Saturday unveiled a sweeping KSh110 billion development package for the Lower Eastern region during a major gathering of more than 10,000 grassroots leaders at the Kitui State Lodge.

The announcement came as the President concluded a three-day tour of the region, during which he has been operating from the Kitui State Lodge since Wednesday, meeting various local delegations and inspecting ongoing government projects.

Flanked by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, the President outlined what he termed one of the largest government investment drives ever undertaken in Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni counties, saying no previous administration had matched this scale.

Ruto disclosed that KSh64 billion is earmarked for urban transformation projects, among them 44,000 affordable housing units, 15,000-bed student hostels, and 39 fresh produce markets. He said these developments will spur urban renewal, create jobs, and uplift livelihoods across Lower Eastern.

He also highlighted the ongoing upgrade of 600 kilometres of roads worth KSh30 billion, describing it as the first phase of an ambitious plan to enhance connectivity, boost commerce, and open new economic corridors in the region.

On water infrastructure, the President reaffirmed a KSh9.6 billion commitment to completing the Thwake Multipurpose Dam, now in its final stages. The dam is expected to supply dependable water for domestic use, irrigation, and industrial development for communities in the three counties.

Ruto insisted that the magnitude of these projects reflects his administration’s firm commitment to equitable development, noting that Lower Eastern remains a central pillar in his national economic transformation agenda.

The gathering at Kitui State Lodge brought together grassroots leaders, political mobilisers, and community representatives, with the President using the forum to present his development scorecard and outline the next phase of government projects in the region.
