A dramatic scene unfolded on Thursday evening in Nguni River, Mwingi Central Constituency, after a Probox vehicle was swept away by raging waters following heavy rains pounding the region.

According to reports, the ill-fated vehicle was stuck mid-river when the fast-moving waters overwhelmed it, dragging it downstream. Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded in the incident.

The tragedy comes just a day after authorities at Nguni Police Station ordered the closure of access to River Enziu, another notorious crossing point in Kitui County, following the heavy downpour witnessed across the country.

Dangerous Waters Continue to Wreak Havoc

The Nguni River incident is the latest reminder of the dangers posed by crossing flooded rivers, especially in Kitui County, where deadly accidents have been recorded in the past.

In recent years, River Enziu has made national headlines after several fatal accidents, including the 2021 tragedy where over 30 people perished after a school bus was swept away. Authorities have been warning motorists and pedestrians against attempting to cross flooded rivers, but many continue to take the risk.

    Authorities Urge Caution

With more rains expected in the coming days, residents in Mwingi, Kitui, and other parts of Eastern Kenya have been advised to avoid risky crossings and use alternative safer routes.

Authorities have reiterated that no one should underestimate the power of floodwaters, as even seemingly shallow streams can quickly turn into raging torrents capable of carrying away vehicles and people.
