President William Ruto has fired Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi and nominated Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku as his replacement.

The announcement was made today from State House Nairobi, ending weeks of speculation following growing tensions between Muturi and President Ruto. Muturi, who previously served as Kenya’s Attorney General, had been under pressure after the President publicly questioned his competence.

Recently, President Ruto criticized Muturi over his failure to establish the Waqf Commission during his tenure as Attorney General, calling him “fairly incompetent.” Muturi defended his record, insisting he delivered on his mandate, but his fate appeared sealed.

Ruto’s nomination of Geoffrey Ruku, a first-term MP and a close ally, signals the President’s move to tighten his grip on the public service sector ahead of the 2027 General Election. Ruku is expected to resign from Parliament to take up the cabinet position once vetted and approved.

Muturi, known for his firm stand on governance issues, had vowed not to resign unless fired. “I will not be a coward. If I am fired for standing by the truth, so be it,” Muturi stated recently while defending his record.
Ruku’s nomination is now awaiting parliamentary approval, with political pundits viewing the move as part of a broader realignment in the Kenya Kwanza administration.
