‘Pray for Kalonzo to Think Smart in 2027 Strategy,’ Muthama Warns Against Tribal Politics

Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama has urged Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to avoid tribal-based political arrangements as the 2027 presidential race begins to take shape.

Speaking on Sunday at AIC Kidongo Church in Shimba Hills, Kwale County, Muthama questioned recent claims by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that Mount Kenya leaders had struck a political deal to back Kalonzo’s presidential bid.

Gachagua had claimed the alleged arrangement involved Mount Kenya securing dominance in Nairobi politics, including control of the governorship and a majority of elective seats in the capital, in exchange for supporting Kalonzo in 2027.

Kalonzo has since publicly denied the existence of any such pact, saying he has not entered into tribal or seat-sharing agreements with any political bloc.

Muthama said the idea of pre-arranged ethnic deals undermines democratic choice and voter freedom.

“Ni mjinga gani ataamka asubuhi apige kura kwa sanduku akijua viti zimeenda na mtu fulani?” he said.

He urged Kalonzo to pursue a national, issue-based campaign, arguing that no single community can deliver the presidency.

“Sio kura ya Mkikuyu inaweza mfanya rais, sio kura ya Mkamba inaweza mfanya rais — ni kura za Wakenya,” Muthama said.

The former senator called on political leaders to reject divisive politics and build broad national coalitions.

“Tuwache hii ukora ndogo ndogo, tuunganishe taifa letu,” he added.

Muthama’s remarks come amid heightened political activity and shifting alliances as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
