In a significant legal victory, The Political Parties Tribunal has upheld the nomination of Augustus Kyalo Muli, leader of the National Liberal Party (NLP), as the representative of the Azimio La Umoja coalition on the Selection Panel tasked with recruiting new IEBC commissioners.
The ruling brings to an end a contentious legal battle that has seen Muli’s nomination challenged by rival factions within the Azimio coalition.

Muli’s nomination had faced opposition from some members of the coalition, leading to a legal dispute over his suitability to represent Azimio in the critical selection process. However, in its ruling, the court affirmed that the nomination was in full compliance with the law, dismissing the objections raised against him.
Speaking after the ruling, Muli expressed gratitude for the court’s decision, emphasizing the importance of a transparent and impartial selection process for the IEBC. “I am committed to ensuring that the process of recruiting the next team of IEBC commissioners is conducted with integrity and fairness. This is a crucial moment for the future of our country’s electoral process,” Muli stated.
The ruling strengthens Muli’s position within the Azimio coalition, as he takes up the role of representing the alliance in one of the most significant exercises in the country’s democratic landscape. The Selection Panel will be responsible for vetting candidates to replace outgoing IEBC commissioners, a process that is key to ensuring credible future elections in Kenya.

Azimio leaders have welcomed the court’s decision, calling it a victory for the coalition and a step toward restoring confidence in the electoral process.
