Political Parties Disputes Tribunal Suspends ODM Resolution to Remove Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) has suspended the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) resolution seeking to remove Senator Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General, marking a significant legal twist in the party’s escalating internal crisis.

In interim orders issued pending the hearing and determination of the case, the tribunal halted the implementation of the contested resolution and blocked its publication in the Kenya Gazette. The move effectively preserves the status quo and allows Sifuna to remain in office — at least temporarily.

The decision comes amid a fierce succession battle within ODM, where rival factions have been locked in a public and political showdown over control of the party’s leadership structures in the post-Raila Odinga era.

By barring the Gazette notice, the tribunal has prevented the removal from taking legal effect, handing Sifuna a crucial procedural reprieve after attempts to formalize his ouster through party mechanisms.

The orders will remain in force until the matter is fully heard and determined, setting the stage for what could be a landmark ruling on internal party democracy, constitutional procedure, and the limits of NEC authority.

The development shifts the ODM power struggle from internal meetings and press conferences to a legal battleground, with the outcome likely to shape the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

As things stand, Edwin Sifuna remains ODM Secretary General — pending the tribunal’s final determination.
