A bizarre burial in Nyatike, Migori County, has sparked outrage after a 40-year-old man was interred without a coffin or customary rites, with relatives justifying the act by claiming he failed to contribute to family meetings and burial funds during his lifetime.

Witnesses say the man’s body was wrapped in plain cloth and hurriedly lowered into a shallow grave as his kin watched in silence — a spectacle that left neighbors stunned and angered. The burial, conducted without prayers or rituals, has been described by locals as “the ultimate humiliation of the dead.”

According to villagers, the deceased had long been branded an outcast by his extended family, who accused him of being absent from communal obligations, including financial contributions to burial committees. His relatives allegedly resolved that he did not deserve the honor of a coffin, a decision that has triggered heated debate across the community.

The matter has now drawn the attention of authorities, with several family members summoned to explain their actions. Investigators are said to be treating the incident as a potential case of neglect and abuse, even as cultural leaders warn that such acts could bring curses upon the family and the entire clan.

Elders in the area have condemned the burial, insisting that no matter the disputes in life, every person deserves dignity in death. “Even the poorest among us are buried with a coffin and prayers. What this family did is shocking, shameful, and against our traditions,” one elder remarked.

The incident has since gone viral on social media, with Kenyans expressing shock and demanding answers. Many are questioning whether grudges and poverty are eroding the very essence of communal life, while others see the case as a chilling reminder of the fragile balance between tradition, obligation, and personal disputes.
