The Kenya Union of Journalist (KUJ) has threatened to mobilize it’s members countrywide for a mass action against the Standard Media Group for failure to pay their journalists for over a period of six months.

KUJ Secretary General Eric Oduor says that KUJ, has held consultative meetings with the media organisation but it has failed to honor its pledge of clearing photography team pending salaries, and now wants all other media outlets to rally behind them and support through mass action .

“As the industry, we have had a number of consultations and for a start, let us come and speak so that it can be heard by everyone and everyone can know what is happening at Standard.” Said Oduor

Adresing the members of the Fourth Estate today at a Nairobi Hotel, The KUJ Secretary General Eric Oduor termed the delayed salaries by Standard Media Group as a threat to media freedom and a sign of disrespect by their employers.

The Executive Director of the Association of Media Women in Kenya Patience Nyange , emphasized on KUJ sentiments and called on journalists to speak out against such vices without fear.

“It only means the situation is dire and it is important that all of us speak out and express ourselves, whether anonymously or through associations that we are affiliated with, that way we have more to say and we can present to the organization,” Nyange said.
