NLP Raises Concern Over Candidate Intimidation Ahead of November 27th By-Elections

The National Liberal Party (NLP) has accused mainstream political parties of using underhanded tactics to edge out its candidates ahead of the November 27th by-elections.

Party Leader Dr. Augustus Muli claimed that NLP aspirants have, on multiple occasions, been coerced to withdraw their candidature in favor of rival contestants. He described the trend as a deliberate attempt to stifle competition and deny Kenyans genuine political choice.

“As a party we had a total of nine candidates for the November 27th by-elections. Unfortunately, three of them have been influenced by our opponents to drop their candidature in favor of other candidates,” Dr. Muli said.

He made the remarks while presenting certificates to NLP candidates contesting in Kaspul and Ugunja constituencies, as well as Mumbuni North and Kariobangi North ward by-elections.

Despite the setbacks, Dr. Muli affirmed that NLP remains resolute and will continue to operate within the law while campaigning for its candidates. “We will not be intimidated into silence. NLP will stand firm for democracy and fair competition,” he vowed.

The party leader further noted that on Thursday, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) met with the Political Parties Liaison Committee to deliberate on the 2027 General Election and the upcoming by-elections. According to him, all parties agreed that any political outfit engaging in malpractice or violence should be barred from participating in elections.

With the November 27th by-elections drawing closer, NLP now finds itself battling both on the campaign trail and against political pressure from larger parties keen to tighten their grip.
