Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims that the united opposition has already agreed on a presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general elections.
This comes just hours after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua declared that he would be the opposition’s candidate in the next polls, a statement that stirred speculation across the political scene.

Natembeya, however, maintained that no decision has been made on who will fly the opposition ticket, insisting that the selection process will be guided by both popularity and resource capacity.
“For one to be picked as a flagbearer, the team must weigh how many people they can attract and their ability to run a full presidential campaign,” Natembeya said.
The remarks highlight the growing jostle within the opposition camp, where several names — including seasoned politicians and emerging figures — continue to be floated as possible contenders.

While Gachagua’s claim signals his intent to reposition himself politically, Natembeya stressed that the coalition will make its choice at the right time, after wide consultations.
The fresh exchange underscores the uncertainty over the opposition’s strategy ahead of 2027, coming at a time when the country’s political landscape is marked by shifting alliances, impeachment battles, and growing public discontent over the state of the economy. As the election clock ticks, the question of who will carry the opposition mantle remains unanswered — and fiercely contested.
