Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has introduced a new bill aimed at extending the terms of the President and all elected leaders from the current five years to seven years.
The proposed Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2024 also seeks to establish the office of the Prime Minister. This move echoes recommendations from the National Dialogue Committee and the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) reports.
According to the Bill, the Prime Minister will be appointed by the President from among sitting Members of Parliament and will lead the largest party or coalition in Parliament.
The Bill is set for its first reading in the Senate, where it is expected to spark significant debate on the future of Kenya’s leadership structure.
