Police in Emali, Makueni County, have launched an investigation following the death of a middle-aged man who was lynched by a mob after snatching an AK-47 from a police officer and firing at civilians indiscriminately.
The terrifying incident occurred on Monday afternoon near the busy Emali market, where the police officer was stationed outside Kwetu Sacco.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Channel 15 News, the suspect, who remains unidentified, engaged the officer in a violent scuffle before cutting him on the right side of his torso. The injured officer, in his moment of distress, lost control of his weapon, allowing the man to seize the firearm and begin shooting aimlessly at members of the public.
“He slashed the officer, and when the officer went down, he grabbed the gun and started shooting. Everyone was terrified, running in all directions,” recalled an eyewitness.
The officer was immediately rushed to Bettercare Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to Nairobi West Hospital, where he is currently recuperating in stable condition.

In the midst of the chaos, a few courageous locals sprang into action, confronting the gunman and eventually disarming him. However, an angry mob descended on the suspect, beating him to death before police backup could arrive to intervene.
Police have cordoned off the area, collecting forensic evidence, and have launched an investigation into the attacker’s identity and possible motives. “We are looking into all possibilities, including the mental state of the suspect and whether he had any criminal background,” said a police who didn’t want to be named as he is not authorized to speak to press
No civilians were injured in the shooting, though several individuals were treated for shock. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information about the deceased to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The incident has sparked conversations about the safety of officers on duty and the need for enhanced security measures, particularly in high-traffic areas such as Emali market.
