Human rights activist Mwabili Mwagodi has been found alive in Diani, Kwale County, days after he was reportedly abducted in neighbouring Tanzania under mysterious circumstances.

According to Hussein Khalid, a prominent human rights defender, Mwagodi was discovered in a distressed state and was immediately rushed to a medical facility in Mombasa for first aid and evaluation. His physical condition remains stable, though he appeared visibly shaken and traumatized in a video that captured the emotional moment of his rescue and reunion with his handlers.

“He is safe, but clearly disturbed by the ordeal,” Khalid told reporters, confirming that Mwagodi was receiving care and undergoing debriefing by both medical personnel and human rights monitors.

The circumstances surrounding Mwagodi’s disappearance have triggered concern among human rights circles, with initial reports suggesting he may have been targeted due to his activism. His reported abduction in Tanzania has raised red flags over cross-border operations and the safety of activists operating across East Africa.

Authorities are now expected to launch a joint investigation into the alleged abduction, with particular attention on how he was moved from Tanzania and ended up in Kenya without detection by either country’s immigration systems.

“We are demanding a thorough and transparent investigation into what appears to be a cross-border violation of individual freedoms and basic human rights,” Khalid added.

More details are expected to emerge as investigators piece together the timeline of Mwagodi’s disappearance and recovery. Human rights organizations are also calling for enhanced security and legal protections for activists working in high-risk environments across the region.
