Former Chief Justice David Maraga has issued a powerful call for justice, demanding the immediate arrest of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy IG Eliud Lagat, and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohammed Amin over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, June 16, Maraga gave authorities until June 25 to act—warning that failure to arrest the three senior police officials would leave him no choice but to join Kenyans in initiating a private prosecution.
“Enough is enough,” Maraga declared. “The Inspector General, his deputy, and the DCI chief must be arrested for their role in covering up the abduction, torture, and murder of Albert Ojwang. Their sworn affidavits are not only misleading but blatantly false and contradict earlier reports from within the police service.”
The former CJ said the credibility of the National Police Service is on the line and accused the top brass of obstructing justice by issuing conflicting accounts meant to protect those responsible.
Ojwang’s death has sparked public outrage after emerging reports linked his torture and killing to coordinated acts within the Central Police Station, with at least three civilian suspects alleged to have been used by police officers before being quietly released and later rearrested.
Maraga’s statement significantly escalates pressure on the state, framing the matter not just as a case of rogue officers but a systemic collapse of accountability at the highest levels of the police command.
