In a significant step toward supporting People with Disabilities (PWDs), Makueni County has announced a partnership with Hope Mobility Kenya to establish a specialized mobility devices fitting and modification center in Wote town. This new facility will provide crucial services such as wheelchair fitting, customization, and vocational training to address the mobility needs of PWDs within the region.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. highlighted that Hope Mobility Kenya, with whom Makueni has built a five-year partnership, will offer technical support to set up the center and train local personnel in wheelchair modification techniques. This effort aims to ensure that PWDs receive devices suited to their specific conditions, avoiding health complications that often arise from ill-fitting mobility aids.

Michael Panther, founder of Hope Mobility, spoke on the importance of the initiative, emphasizing that improperly fitted devices can harm recipients. “This center will be essential in addressing the unique needs of each individual, reducing health risks, and improving overall quality of life for PWDs,” Panther stated while overseeing the distribution of 400 wheelchairs in Makueni during a recent three-day fitting program.
Governor Mutula also envisions the center as a comprehensive resource hub for PWDs, offering services ranging from assessments to capacity-building programs and vocational training, all under one roof.

This partnership marks an important milestone for Makueni County, signaling a strong commitment to inclusivity and improved access to services for PWDs. The center is expected to become a model for disability support services in Kenya, bringing greater independence and dignity to the lives of thousands in the community.
