Machakos County Minister for Roads and Transport, Rita Ndunge, commonly known as Kana Rita, has been suspended with immediate effect pending investigations into allegations of violating the Leadership and Integrity Act of 2019.

In a letter dated 25th November2024, Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti officially informed Ndunge of her suspension to allow for a thorough investigation into claims that she had unlawfully solicited funds from members of the public in exchange for services within her department.

The letter highlights that as a member of the County Executive Committee, Ndunge is expected to adhere to the highest standards of integrity as outlined in the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the County Government Act, 2012, and the Leadership and Integrity Act, 2019.

Hon Rita Ndunge is accused by Machakos residents of soliciting monies to deliver services under her docket

The suspension is a significant move by the Machakos County government, and it comes as part of the ongoing effort to uphold accountability and transparency in the management of public resources. Ndunge has been instructed to report to the office of the County Secretary for further directions as the investigations unfold.

This suspension adds to the growing attention on leadership and integrity within county governments, as local officials are increasingly scrutinized over their conduct in office.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti, in her communication, emphasized the importance of due process, confirming that Ndunge would remain suspended until the investigation is concluded and further communication is provided.

The case is expected to stir debate on the adherence to ethical standards in public office as Machakos County residents and the wider public await the outcome of the investigation.
