On International Women’s Day, the Kyalo Kya Maendeleo (KKM) Foundation’s basketry program received special recognition from Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and development partners for its transformative impact on local women’s lives. The governor purchased several baskets from the women, empowering and inspiring them to continue their commendable work.

Empowering Women Through Modern Basketry

Established in 2022 by Dr. Augustus Muli, KKM Foundation aims to empower Kitui women through training in modern basket weaving techniques and by securing ready markets for their products. To date, over 2,000 women have been trained as trainers, enabling them to pass on their skills to others. The foundation also provides materials for production, ensuring that the artisans have the necessary resources to create high-quality products.

Global Reach and Economic Impact
Between 2023 and 2024, KKM facilitated the weaving and export of over 2,500 baskets to Europe and Middle East countries, significantly boosting the local economy. This initiative has not only provided a sustainable source of income for the women but has also elevated the global profile of Kitui’s traditional crafts.

Recognition and Support
During the International Women’s Day celebrations, Governor Malombe praised the foundation’s efforts, stating that such initiatives are instrumental in uplifting communities and preserving cultural heritage. By purchasing the baskets, the governor demonstrated tangible support for the artisans, encouraging them to continue their valuable work.
A Transformative Journey
The success of KKM’s basketry program underscores the potential of community-based organizations in driving socio-economic development. By equipping women with marketable skills and connecting them to international markets, the foundation has become a game-changer in the region, fostering financial independence and community growth.
