The Kitui County Assembly is expected to discuss a report on the vetting of nominees for the Kitui Municipality Board today after it was presented yesterday at the floor of the house.

The report was submitted in accordance with Standing Orders No. 179(6) and 184

The report was tabled by the Majority Leader, Hon. Munyoki Mwinzi, who is also a member of the Appointments Committee.

During the tabling of the report , the plenary session was chaired by Deputy Speaker, Hon. Christopher Nzilu, the representative for Kyangwithya West.

Two weeks ago the Acting Kitui County Secretary, Ms. Agnes Mulewa distanced herself from the controversial appointments to the Kitui Municipal Board, placing the blame squarely on Chief Officer for Urban Development, Mr. Evans Mutemi.

Mulewa accused Mutemi of breaching the law and failing to declare a conflict of interest when appointing a relative of an officer in the Governor’s office.

Appearing before the County Assembly Committee on Appointments on a separate hearing , Dr. Florence Makindi disclosed that the Board had based its selection process on a directive from Mr. Evans Mutemi, the Chief Officer for Urban Development, who had issued a letter to advertise the Municipal Board vacancies.

She emphasized that this action was taken independently, without instructions from the Office of the Governor or the County Secretary. However, the session took a turn when the Committee on Appointments inquired about the minutes of the shortlisted candidates who met the criteria for nomination.
