Kitui Central Member of Parliament, Dr. Makali Mulu, has called for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to relinquish key oversight committee positions in Parliament, accusing the party of losing its moral authority to lead such committees following its new alliance with the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Dr. Mulu, a prominent member of the Wiper Democratic Movement, has voiced strong opposition to ODM’s continued leadership in crucial parliamentary watchdog roles, such as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Public Investments Committee (PIC). He argues that ODM’s recent political maneuverings with Kenya Kwanza have compromised its integrity and rendered it unfit to oversee government operations impartially.
“The recent unholy marriage between ODM and Kenya Kwanza is a betrayal of the trust Kenyans have placed in these committees,” Dr. Mulu stated. “ODM can no longer claim to be a watchdog when it is in bed with the very forces it is supposed to hold accountable.”
Dr. Mulu’s remarks come amidst growing tension within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, of which both ODM and Wiper are key members. The Kitui Central legislator has urged Wiper’s leader, Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, to sever ties with ODM and begin seeking new political alliances, particularly with leaders from the Mount Kenya region, in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
“Wiper is now the true opposition party in the National Assembly,” Dr. Mulu asserted. “We must start building new partnerships and strengthening our numbers if we are to present a credible challenge in the next presidential election. ODM’s leadership has shown itself to be dishonest and untrustworthy.”
The call for Wiper to break away from Azimio and ODM comes as political realignments in Kenya’s shifting landscape continue to unfold. Dr. Mulu’s strong stance reflects a growing sentiment among some Wiper members that the party needs to chart its own course, independent of its current coalition partners.
As the country gears up for the 2027 elections, Dr. Mulu’s comments are likely to spark further debate within the opposition and could potentially lead to a significant realignment of political forces in the coming months.
