A quiet village in Kisii County is reeling from the horror of an unimaginable crime — a father who murdered his wife, cooked her remains, and fed them to his own children, has been burnt alive by a furious mob.
Stephen Onserio, a 50-year-old man from the Sungubo area, was lynched after confessing to the gruesome crime that has shocked the nation and triggered widespread outrage.
According to Nyamache Sub-County Police Commander Kipkulei Kipkemoi, Onserio admitted to brutally killing his wife, dismembering her body, and preparing her flesh as a meal for their children, who unknowingly consumed it.
“This is the most horrifying thing we’ve seen in years,” said Kipkemoi. “It’s not just murder — it’s cannibalism and extreme child abuse.”
The traumatized children are currently under the care of authorities, receiving medical and psychological support. Details of the children’s ages and condition remain closely guarded due to the extreme nature of the incident.
Disturbingly, this is not Onserio’s first known act of domestic brutality. Police confirmed he had previously been arrested and jailed for killing his first wife, but was mysteriously released two years ago. Community members say his return to the village was met with unease, but few could have predicted the depth of his evil.
Adding to the horror, neighbors claim that Onserio had impregnated one of his own daughters, a survivor now under protection after fleeing their home. The case has exposed deep cracks in child protection systems, mental health oversight, and post-conviction monitoring in rural Kenya.
“He was feared by everyone,” said one neighbor. “We used to hear screams from the house, but nobody thought it would come to this.”
As police begin piecing together the timeline of events, Kenya’s social media has erupted in outrage, calling for urgent reforms in monitoring released convicts, and more robust protection for women and children in rural communities.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has opened a file on the incident, and the Ministry of Interior is expected to release a statement.
