A cloud of shock and unease has descended on Kiminini village after a 41-year-old man, Gabriel Kiplimo, exhumed the body of his wife, claiming she had been visiting him in dreams, pleading to be set free.
The wife, identified as Namalwa, had been buried three weeks prior. But according to Kiplimo, her spirit has been tormenting him nightly—appearing in vivid dreams where she tearfully begged him to retrieve her body, alleging that traditional herbs had been buried with her, binding her soul.
The unsettling incident unfolded earlier this week when Kiplimo, acting alone, dug up his wife’s grave in the quiet of dawn. Witnesses say he handled the process with astonishing gentleness. Upon reaching the casket, he unwrapped her remains, carefully cleaned the body, applied oil and lip balm, and appeared to whisper to her as though engaged in a deep conversation.
“He wasn’t frantic or erratic. It was as though he believed he was doing something sacred,” said one villager who watched in stunned silence.
The act has triggered uproar in the deeply conservative community, where cultural taboos strictly forbid disturbing the dead. Elders and religious leaders have condemned the exhumation, terming it not only a spiritual defilement but also a legal violation.
Friends of Kiplimo revealed that he had struggled with intense grief and isolation following Namalwa’s death. They say he had recently become withdrawn and fixated on the dreams, which he interpreted as supernatural messages.
Local authorities have since launched investigations into the matter, with law enforcement assessing whether the exhumation was lawful and whether Kiplimo may need psychological evaluation.
