Teresia Wambui Kihagi, the owner of a daycare center in Kabete, Kiambu County, has been ordered to remain in custody for 14 days as police continue investigating disturbing allegations of child pornography. The court has set the next mention for October 17, granting investigators additional time to gather evidence and probe further into the case.
According to court documents, Kihagi’s daycare, which has been operational for three years, housed more than ten minors, all of whom are believed to be victims of her alleged criminal acts. The minors, aged between two and four years, were reportedly subjected to sexual exploitation, with videos allegedly recorded by Kihagi while engaging in inappropriate activities involving the children.
The case came to light after law enforcement officers confiscated Kihagi’s phone, which she had allegedly tried to destroy to erase evidence. Investigators are now focusing on retrieving the data from the phone, which is believed to contain recordings of the illegal activities. Additionally, the daycare’s Equity paybill is under scrutiny to trace any potential financial transactions linked to these illicit acts.
Parents of the affected children have not yet provided direct statements, but police are working through intermediaries to collect information to aid the investigation. The minors involved have been taken to medical facilities for examinations, with authorities committed to ensuring their safety and well-being.
Detectives handling the case requested an extended detention period to allow for thorough digital forensic analysis of the evidence, which may be crucial in unraveling the full scope of the alleged crimes. Kihagi is expected to undergo a mental health assessment during this time as well, as part of the investigation process.
This case has triggered an outcry from parents and the local community, demanding stricter regulations and oversight on childcare institutions to prevent further exploitation of vulnerable children.
