Nairobi was left in shock today morning after a man set himself on fire outside the Supreme Court, decrying the slow pace of justice in his case.
The victim, identified as James Kipira, suffered severe burns in the dramatic Tuesday morning incident. Witnesses say he arrived at the court compound carrying a bundle of documents, poured petrol over his body, and attempted to ignite the fire using a lighter from his pocket.

“He first tried to light the fire on his neck, but it failed. He then squatted and ignited the flames from his lower body,” a witness recounted.
Court security had noticed Kipira acting suspiciously and detected the strong smell of petrol. As flames engulfed him, he frantically removed his burning jacket and shirt before collapsing near the gate. Security officers rushed to extinguish the fire as emergency responders arrived to aid him.

The Struggle Behind the Flames
Documents recovered from the scene reveal Kipira’s frustration over a prolonged legal battle stemming from a car sale dispute in Mombasa. In 2023, he had purchased a vehicle for taxi use, paying a Ksh 300,000 deposit. However, the sellers refused to release the car until he paid the full Ksh 1.3 million, citing a lack of insurance and responsibility for any damage.

Feeling cheated, Kipira took the matter to court. However, the case has dragged on for months, leaving him financially and emotionally drained. Speaking to police and medics after the incident, he expressed his despair over judicial bureaucracy and his fading hope for justice.
Judiciary’s Backlog Crisis
Kipira’s case highlights the mounting crisis within Kenya’s judiciary, where thousands of cases remain unresolved due to a shortage of judicial officers. Despite reforms, the wheels of justice continue to turn agonizingly slowly for many Kenyans.
Senior security and judiciary officials have launched an investigation into the incident as Kipira receives medical treatment. His act of desperation is a stark reminder of the frustrations many face in their pursuit of justice.
