The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) has issued a scathing statement demanding the immediate revocation of President William Ruto’s appointment of former Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa as the chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB).

In a strongly worded protest, IEK argues that Jumwa lacks the professional qualifications required to oversee Kenya’s critical road infrastructure, terming her appointment as an insult to the engineering profession. The engineers’ body insists that the role demands technical expertise and experience in road construction, planning, and management—qualifications they claim Jumwa does not possess.
Engineers Cry Foul Over ‘Political Placements’
The engineers’ fraternity has accused the Ruto administration of prioritizing political loyalty over professional merit. “This is a clear case of political patronage at the expense of professionalism. Roads are the backbone of our economy, and the Kenya Roads Board should be led by an individual with relevant experience in engineering and infrastructure,” the IEK statement reads in part.
IEK is now calling on Parliament and relevant government agencies to intervene and ensure that the position is filled based on merit, not political considerations.
Backlash from Experts and Civil Society
The uproar from engineers adds to a growing chorus of concerns from governance watchdogs and civil society groups, who argue that key state agencies are being turned into ‘reward centers’ for political allies. Critics have also pointed out that Kenya’s road sector is facing major challenges, including stalled projects and poor road quality, which require competent leadership to resolve.
“This appointment sends the wrong signal about the government’s commitment to professionalism in public service,” said a senior infrastructure expert who spoke to Channel 15 News.
Aisha Jumwa’s Controversial Public Service History
Jumwa, a former Malindi MP, has been at the center of several controversies, including a murder charge that was later dropped and corruption allegations during her tenure as Public Service CS. Her appointment to the Kenya Roads Board has reignited debate on whether President Ruto is genuinely committed to a competence-based government or merely rewarding political loyalists.
Despite the backlash, the government is yet to respond to the demands for revocation. All eyes are now on State House and the Transport Ministry to see whether the engineers’ concerns will be addressed or if the appointment will stand amid the storm of criticism.
