A night out turned into a deadly confrontation in the early hours of February 23, 2025, when a police officer attached to VIP protection fatally shot a General Service Unit (GSU) officer outside a club in Ruaraka.
The incident, which occurred around 1:20 AM along Outering Road near Naivas area, involved a Police Constable Raphael Kimuli Wambua of the GSU, who was attached to the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), and his brother Eric Wambua. The two reportedly got into an altercation with another Police Constables Ezekiel Tarus, an officer from Central Police Station assigned to VIP protection for the CEO of Safaricom.

According to police sources, what began as a heated exchange between the officers escalated into a physical fight. As tensions flared, Tarus allegedly drew his service firearm—a Jericho pistol, serial number KP 44338440—and opened fire, fatally shooting Wambua.
Bystanders who witnessed the altercation reacted in fury, turning on Tarus in an apparent attempt at mob justice. However, officers from Ruaraka Police Station responded swiftly, rescuing Tarus and rushing him to Nairobi West Hospital for treatment.

The crime scene was secured by Regional Crime Scene Investigators (CSI), who recovered the Jericho pistol with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition as evidence. The body of the deceased was moved to Kenyatta University Mortuary as investigations into the tragic incident continue.
Police have not yet released a formal statement on what led to the altercation, but sources indicate that alcohol may have played a role in the deadly scuffle. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the discipline and conduct of officers, particularly those tasked with critical security duties.
