In a dramatic twist of events, two university students who had been masquerading as senior Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officials were arrested on Tuesday after attempting to extort public officials in Bungoma County.

The suspects, Tobias Singila Wekesa (23) and Sharon Nanjala Anyango (26), were caught red-handed at the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) offices in Bungoma, where they had staged an unauthorized ‘raid’ under the pretense of investigating financial irregularities in CDF projects.

    The Great Deception

Posing as high-ranking EACC officers, Wekesa introduced himself as the “Director of EACC Kakamega County” while Anyango falsely claimed to be the “Director at EACC Nairobi.” Their elaborate scheme involved intimidating officials, claiming to have incriminating evidence against them, and demanding bribes to make the alleged ‘investigations’ disappear.

However, their con came crashing down when NG-CDF staff grew suspicious and alerted law enforcement officers, leading to a swift arrest at the scene.

    Behind Bars and Facing Justice

The duo is currently being held at Bungoma Central Police Station, where they await further legal processing. Authorities have launched investigations into whether the suspects have been running similar fraudulent operations elsewhere.

Law enforcement officials have urged public servants and the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals posing as government officers.

This shocking incident exposes the growing trend of fraudsters exploiting fears of corruption investigations to prey on unsuspecting officials. With the suspects in custody, the question remains—how many other public offices have fallen victim to their scheme before today’s takedown?
