The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested five traffic police officers attached to Busia Police Station for allegedly demanding bribes from motorists along the Kisumu–Busia highway.

According to the Commission, the officers were nabbed during an intelligence-led operation at a roadblock situated about five kilometres from Busia Town. The sting followed a series of complaints from motorists and members of the public over rampant extortion at the checkpoint.

Those arrested include Corporal Hezron Aburi, Corporal Mary Nabei, Police Constable James Weru, Police Constable Mwakwekwe Nyoka, and Police Constable Aisha Abdullahi.

Investigations revealed that the officers routinely demanded bribes from motorists entering or exiting the border town—often without conducting any traffic checks or enforcing road safety regulations.

The suspects were taken to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma for questioning before being booked at Bungoma Police Station pending further processing.

EACC, in a statement, said the crackdown is part of a broader anti-graft drive targeting corruption hotspots in public service delivery points, especially within law enforcement and transport sectors.

“The Commission is scaling up intelligence gathering and surveillance to curb bribery and improve access to quality public services for all citizens,” the statement read in part.

The arrests highlight EACC’s renewed push to curb roadside corruption and restore integrity within Kenya’s traffic police department—a sector long plagued by bribery complaints
