The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on January 28, 2026, arrested a Kisumu-based police officer over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe of KSh 15,000.
The suspect, identified as Sergeant Gilbert Kiama Oduor, is attached to Mamboleo Police Post in Kisumu County. His arrest followed a complaint lodged with the Commission by a member of the public whose relative had been taken into custody on suspicion of possessing bhang.
Investigations revealed that police officers from Mamboleo Police Post, accompanied by the area chief, raided the home of one John Oluoch. Although no illegal substances were recovered during the operation, Mr. Oluoch was nonetheless arrested and booked at the police post on January 23, 2026.
Further inquiries established that when the complainant followed up on the matter, they were referred to Sergeant Kiama, who allegedly demanded the bribe in exchange for ensuring that Mr. Oluoch would not be arraigned in court to face the alleged possession charges. The complainant subsequently reported the matter to the EACC.
The Commission further established that officers at Mamboleo Police Post allegedly facilitated Mr. Oluoch to solicit bribe money from his relatives while he was held in custody from January 23 to January 28, 2026. He was eventually taken to court on January 28, 2026.
On the same day, EACC officers mounted an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect at the Winam Law Courts as he allegedly received the KSh 15,000 bribe from the complainant.
Following his arrest, the suspect was booked at the Railways and Ports Police Station, processed, and later released on bond pending the conclusion of investigations.
The Commission has cautioned public officers against engaging in corrupt practices and reiterated its commitment to eradicating bribery at public service delivery points in a bid to improve access to quality services for all citizens.
