In a shocking turn of events, six men who had been masquerading as matatu operators in Parklands have been arrested by vigilant detectives from the Operations Support Unit (OSU). The gang, who posed as legitimate public transport operators, would rob passengers of their valuables and, in some cases, kidnap them before abandoning their victims after completing their criminal activities.
The arrest was made after a public tip-off led investigators to the matatu with registration number KAQ 654A. The gang’s cover was blown following a road accident along Kipande Road, where their vehicle collided with another after they had already kidnapped and robbed a passenger. The suspects fled the scene, but a witness reported the incident to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
On the day of the incident, the gang reportedly picked up a passenger near Kempinski. Once on board, part of the gang disembarked, leaving the unsuspecting woman at the mercy of the remaining robbers. The criminals began their heist, but the woman’s screams for help caused them to panic, leading to the accident that ultimately exposed their activities.
Acting swiftly on the tip, OSU detectives launched an operation that resulted in the arrest of Boniface Wachira Mwangi, Jackson Kimani Thuo, Titus Mburu Njonjo, Dennis Omondi Otieno, George Vincent Otieno, and John Waweru Njenga. Njenga was found in possession of five stolen mobile phones and a tablet.
Efforts are ongoing to track down a female member of the gang who remains at large. Authorities are urging any victims of this group to come forward and file a report at the DCI Headquarters Operations Directorate for further action.
