The newly constituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has today announced the election of Commissioner Fahima Araphat Abdallah as its Vice Chairperson.

This significant development was confirmed following the Commission’s 288th Plenary Meeting, held at the IEBC Boardroom in Nairobi, just hours after the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chairperson and six commissioners at the Supreme Court earlier in the day.

Commissioner Fahima’s election marks a swift organizational step by the Commission as it begins to lay the groundwork for critical electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 General Elections. Her appointment as Vice Chair now solidifies the leadership structure of the IEBC under Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon.

In an official communication, the Commission extended its congratulations to Commissioner Fahima and reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the Constitution and protecting the integrity of the country’s electoral processes.

“We assure members of the public and our stakeholders that the Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening Kenya’s democracy,” read the statement.

Commissioner Fahima brings with her a background in governance, civic engagement, and electoral integrity, and is expected to play a key role in coordinating the Commission’s internal oversight and external stakeholder relations.

Today’s announcement comes at a time when the IEBC is facing intense pressure to revamp the voter register and restore public confidence in electoral institutions, following years of leadership vacuum and legal hurdles.

With a complete team in place and top leadership now firmly constituted, the Commission is expected to immediately embark on key electoral preparations, including the voter roll audit and a review of electoral boundaries.
