Nairobi, Kenya – In a landmark decision, the Senate has upheld the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after voting separately on 11 charges brought against him, including gross misconduct, corruption, and constitutional violations. The charges, which originated in the National Assembly, led to Gachagua’s ouster after MPs approved the motion last week by the required two-thirds majority.

The Senate, acting as the trial chamber, reviewed each of the 11 charges independently, with senators required to vote on each charge separately. To secure Gachagua’s removal, at least two-thirds of the Senate—45 out of 67 senators—needed to vote in favor of impeachment on any of the charges.

After thorough deliberations, the Senate found sufficient grounds to uphold the charges, officially removing Gachagua from office.
This makes Gachagua the first Deputy President in Kenya’s history to be impeached. In response to the ruling, Gachagua reiterated his stance that the impeachment was politically motivated, stating, “This was an orchestrated attack on my leadership and integrity. I will continue to fight for justice and the truth.”
The political ramifications of this decision are expected to be profound, with President William Ruto now tasked with nominating a new Deputy President.

Analysts predict a strategic move to appoint someone outside of the Mt. Kenya region to maintain regional balance and unity.

This breaking story is still developing, and more updates will follow as the nation grapples with the fallout from this historic decision.
