The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intensified its pursuit of Philip Nahashon Aroko, now declared a person of interest in the chilling assassination of Kasipul MP Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were. The lawmaker was gunned down on April 30 in what authorities describe as a “targeted and premeditated” attack.
In an urgent public notice issued earlier today, the DCI called on Aroko to surrender immediately at the nearest police station. The agency also appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information on Aroko’s whereabouts to contact the toll-free numbers 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203). All information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
Hon. Were, a vocal opposition MP affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), was ambushed at a traffic stop along Ngong Road. According to police reports, two assailants on a motorcycle trailed his vehicle before one dismounted and fired at close range, fatally wounding the legislator. His driver and bodyguard were unharmed.
The DCI has since reconstructed the MP’s movements from Parliament to the crime scene, yielding significant leads. Detectives from the Homicide and Scenes of Crime units have been meticulously gathering evidence, though no arrests have been confirmed as of this report.
The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also launched an independent investigation to determine whether any police officers were involved in the assassination. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen affirmed that both civilian and official involvement are under scrutiny.
Hon. Were had previously expressed concerns for his safety, citing rising unrest in his constituency and hostility at public events. His assassination has sent shockwaves through the nation, with political leaders and citizens alike demanding swift justice.
As the manhunt for Aroko continues, the DCI urges the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could aid in the investigation.
