Former Kitui Governor Hon. Charity Ngilu has urged drivers using the Kitui-Kibwezi Road to exercise greater caution, particularly in market areas where pedestrian traffic is high. Speaking during her visit to three grieving families in Kyoani, Ikutha, Kitui South Constituency, who lost six schoolchildren in a tragic accident, Ngilu emphasized the need for road safety.
The heartbreaking incident occurred yesterday at Wiitu Shopping Center, where an overspeeding Probox fatally struck the children as they attempted to cross the road. Ngilu expressed deep concern over drivers speeding through busy areas, where the risk to pedestrians, especially schoolchildren, is significantly higher.

Ngilu also called on the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to build footbridges and install zebra crossings along the busy Kitui-Kibwezi road to ensure the safety of school-going children.

The former governor’s visit comes just 72 hours after the tragic accident, which claimed the lives of three primary school children and three secondary school students. The driver of the Probox fled the scene but later surrendered to Mutomo Police Station, where he is currently being held pending investigations and a court appearance.
The bodies of the six victims are being preserved at Mutomo Level 4 Hospital, awaiting postmortem examinations.
