A major political realignment is quietly taking shape in the Mt Kenya region after Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reportedly opened talks on a new political alliance linked to former Head of State Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to reports first published by The Star newspaper, the two leaders are working behind the scenes to form a united political front aimed at consolidating the Mt Kenya vote ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The rapprochement comes after years of political hostility between the Jubilee camp and leaders allied to Gachagua, but insiders now say the tension between the two sides appears to be easing as both camps focus on one goal — building a strong regional bloc capable of challenging President William Ruto in the next election.
At the centre of the talks is the possibility of a political merger between the Jubilee Party and Gachagua’s newly formed party, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). Jubilee, once the country’s ruling party under Uhuru Kenyatta, has in recent months intensified efforts to rebuild its grassroots networks across the Mt Kenya region as the political battle for 2027 begins to take shape.
Sources familiar with the negotiations say the proposed merger could result in a new political outfit tentatively named the Democracy for Citizens Alliance (DCA), which would unite key opposition figures drawn largely from the Mt Kenya region.
Under the reported structure of the new alliance, Gachagua would take over as Party Leader, while former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i would serve as a Deputy Leader, with Uhuru Kenyatta taking the position of Party Patron.
Political analysts say the move is aimed at reuniting the Mt Kenya region, which has remained politically divided since the 2022 elections. Gachagua, who previously served as Deputy President before falling out with President Ruto, has already publicly declared his intention to challenge the current administration in the 2027 race.

If the talks succeed, the new alliance could significantly reshape the country’s political landscape by bringing together leaders who were once fierce rivals under one political umbrella.
The leaders involved are reportedly planning joint rallies across the Mt Kenya region in the coming months as part of a wider strategy to consolidate votes and present a united front before the 2027 campaigns officially begin.
The emerging alliance is now being seen as one of the earliest major political battles taking shape ahead of the next General Election, with the Mt Kenya region once again expected to play a decisive role in determining the country’s next president.
