In the wake of recent tragic crocodile attacks that have claimed 20 lives in Kitise, Dr. Sonia Nzilani, Makueni County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture & Tourism, has reaffirmed her commitment to protecting communities and ensuring access to clean and safe water.

While addressing mourners during a burial, Dr. Nzilani raised a critical issue—the increased vulnerability of women and girls who frequently fetch water from rivers, often at great personal risk. Her remarks, intended to spark a conversation on safety and awareness, were met with mixed reactions, but her message remains clear:

“When 20 lives are lost to crocodile attacks, we cannot reduce it to mere numbers. These are human lives, and their loss should not be politicized or hidden behind taboos. It’s time to prioritize safety, education, and awareness to prevent such tragedies.”

Prioritizing Water Access and Community Safety

Recognizing the urgent need for safe water sources, Dr. Nzilani has assured residents that the county government is working tirelessly to implement long-term solutions. She emphasized that efforts are underway to ensure that the people of Kitise no longer have to rely on dangerous river sources for water.

“Let us continue working together toward safety, understanding, and empowerment as the county government works on all modalities of ensuring the people of Kitise have access to safe and clean water supply,” she stated.

Her department, in collaboration with other county agencies, is actively pushing for the development of boreholes, water treatment plants, and other alternative sources to protect residents from further tragedies.

    A Leader Focused on Solutions

Beyond addressing water challenges, Dr. Nzilani is a strong advocate for public education on environmental risks. She believes that awareness and proactive measures—such as clear safety guidelines, community engagement, and investment in infrastructure—are key to protecting vulnerable populations from wildlife threats.

Her dedication to women’s empowerment and community safety remains unwavering, and she has called for constructive dialogue rather than sensationalism. Dr. Nzilani is committed to leading conversations that bring real change to Makueni County, ensuring both safety and development for future generations.

As the county moves forward, her leadership continues to inspire action—not just in Kitise but across Makueni and beyond—toward a safer, more sustainable future.
