In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, a senior official of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in Kilifi County was brutally murdered in the early hours of the morning at her home in Utange, Mukunguni, Kisauni Sub-County, Mombasa County.

The victim, 48-year-old Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, was attacked at 3 a.m. by two assailants who gained entry into her house through the kitchen. The violent attack also left her 18-year-old son seriously injured. He is currently fighting for his life at Premier Hospital in Mombasa.

Mombasa police have launched investigations into the tragic incident, with initial reports indicating the attack may have been a well-planned robbery. However, questions are already being raised about whether the motive goes beyond theft, given the sensitive nature of the victim’s role within the IEBC.

This horrific murder comes at a time when the IEBC Selection Panel is mired in controversy, with a stalemate threatening to derail the appointment of commissioners ahead of the 2027 General Election. The killing of Aisha Akinyi Abubakar is likely to add fuel to the ongoing debate over the security of electoral officials and the politicization of the IEBC’s operations.

The public and civil society groups are now demanding answers and swift action from authorities. Meanwhile, speculation over the motive behind the attack continues to grow, with some linking it to her position within the electoral body.

As the nation mourns the loss of yet another public servant, pressure mounts on law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice and assure Kenyans that electoral officials can operate without fear for their lives.
