As the race for the 2027 Kenyan presidential election begins to take shape, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa are reportedly forging a new political strategy.

In recent private meetings, these leaders have discussed either rebranding or even abandoning the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, aiming to build a fresh platform to counter President William Ruto’s anticipated re-election bid.

Sources indicate that key allies of Gachagua, including former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, are actively involved in establishing new political parties as part of this strategy. Waititu, a staunch defender of Gachagua, recently confirmed he is in the process of acquiring an already registered but inactive party, signaling that he may soon make a public announcement once “loose ends” in the acquisition are tied up. Waititu clarified that Gachagua is not directly involved in his party, though he hinted at potential coalition talks with Musyoka.

Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni has hinted that Waititu may be securing the Kenya Reform Party (KRP), previously affiliated with Azimio. KRP, whose symbol features a mechanical gear and shaft, two leaves, and two spears, was registered in 2016 and is currently led by national chairman Munene Kahiro. The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) recently granted provisional registration to at least seven new parties, including Kenya Ahadi Party (KAP) and Imarisha Uchumi Party (IUP), with others in various stages of registration.

Registrar Anne Nderitu confirmed that her office has yet to receive any formal communication regarding leadership changes or coalition talks, although provisional registrations reflect a shifting political landscape. Alongside Kalonzo Musyoka, Gachagua’s allies are reportedly coordinating a strategy that may significantly alter Kenya’s political landscape as parties and leaders position themselves for 2027.

These developments indicate a notable political realignment, with new alliances and platforms likely to emerge as key players explore pathways to challenge the existing administration in the upcoming election.
