The Ministry of Agriculture has imposed a ban on macadamia harvesting starting November 2, 2024, in a move aimed at preventing the export of immature nuts.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Andrew Karanja stated that the ban is designed to protect local farmers from exploitation by middlemen while ensuring the domestic processing industry has sufficient raw materials to operate at full capacity.

This decision follows concerns from macadamia processors who have been struggling to meet export orders for processed nuts, as they operate below capacity. By focusing on local processing, the government aims to increase the value of macadamia exports, benefiting the economy while safeguarding farmers from brokers who often undermine their profits by purchasing immature nuts.

The Ministry plans to engage stakeholders in public consultations and introduce measures to set fair farm-gate prices, ensuring farmers receive better compensation for their produce. The Agriculture and Food Authority will oversee these efforts to maintain market integrity.
