Nairobi, Kenya — Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has suspended Senate proceedings until 5 PM as the House awaits the attendance of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is currently admitted to a hospital. The Senate is preparing to deliberate on the impeachment motion against Gachagua, and his presence is considered crucial for the process.

Speaker Kingi addressed the chamber, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and reminding the senators that the matter must advance, regardless of external circumstances. “This is a time-bound process, and we must move forward based on the available evidence,” Kingi stated.

The impeachment motion, originally initiated by Kibwezi East MP Mwengi Mutuse in the National Assembly, has reached the Senate for further consideration. For the motion to pass, at least two-thirds of the 67 senators—45 votes—are required to vote in favor.

As the Senate waits for updates on Gachagua’s health, the country remains focused on the outcome of the proceedings, with his hospitalization potentially impacting the direction of the process.
