Oscar Sudi Declares Victory Ahead of Deputy President Gachagua’s Impeachment Vote as Parliament Prepares for Final Decision

Kapsaret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has exuded confidence that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will not overcome the impeachment proceedings currently underway in Parliament.

In a Facebook post shared earlier today, Sudi hinted that the vote would be settled well before the midnight deadline.

“The two weeks ultimatum we gave will be elapsing tonight at 11:59 p.m.,” Sudi wrote. “However, we are ahead of time because as things are, by 9:30 p.m. tonight, we SHALL be home and dry. DONE and DUSTED.”

The impeachment motion, spearheaded by Kibwezi East MP Mwengi Mutuse, centers on 11 charges, including allegations of corruption, abuse of office, and actions undermining national unity. Over the last two weeks, the motion has sparked heated debates in Parliament and across the country, with members of the ruling Kenya Kwanza alliance rallying to defend Gachagua.

Sudi’s confident statement suggests that the vote will fall in favor of the motion mover, with key allies believing they have the numbers to secure axe him. For the impeachment motion to pass, 233 MPs need to vote in support of the charges—a tall order given the political dynamics within Parliament.

Despite the confidence of Gachagua’s supporters, the impeachment process has attracted significant attention. A total of 19 court cases have been filed seeking to block the proceedings, while public hearings across all 47 counties have engaged citizens on the matter. Political observers have noted that should the impeachment succeed, the next Deputy President may be drawn from outside the Mt. Kenya region, as proposed by former Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri, to ensure national unity.

The final vote is currently underway, with MPs set to make their decision before the midnight deadline. As Sudi’s post indicates, the Kenya Kwanza camp appears optimistic about the outcome, but the political landscape could shift rapidly depending on how the vote unfolds.
