The Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Douglas Kanja, has approved the promotion of 1,948 police officers whose career advancements had been pending, following a ruling by the Court of Appeal of Kenya.
The promotions follow the court’s ruling in Civil Appeal Nos. E971 and E957 of 2025, paving the way for the affected officers to advance to various ranks within the National Police Service.

According to the NPS, the officers had completed the required promotional courses and met all the prescribed conditions for advancement before their promotions were approved.
The promotions take effect accordingly, marking a significant development for the affected officers whose career progression had been awaiting resolution.
In a statement, the Inspector General congratulated the newly promoted officers and wished them success as they assume their new ranks and responsibilities.

Kanja urged the officers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and diligence in the discharge of their duties.
He emphasised that promotion comes with greater responsibility, calling on the officers to exercise their mandate with fairness, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
The NPS said the promotions are expected to strengthen operational efficiency and improve service delivery to the public, in line with the Service’s ongoing reforms and strategic objectives.
The Service reiterated its commitment to protecting and serving the public while pursuing its goal of becoming a professional, efficient and responsive police institution.
It also emphasised the importance of people-centred and accountable policing in building a safe and prosperous society.

The announcement places renewed focus on police career progression and the role of institutional and judicial processes in resolving pending employment matters within the country’s security sector.
