Could three prominent politicians whose paths once converged under the Wiper Democratic Movement be moving towards a new political understanding ahead of the August 2027 General Election?
That question is gaining relevance following the highly publicised meeting between Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, followed weeks later by Muthamaโs engagement with Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua.
Although the meetings do not establish that a political deal is underway, their timing has opened an intriguing conversation about former political alliances, competing interests in Ukambani and the search for influence ahead of the next General Election.
The KalonzoโMuthama Meeting That Sparked National Buzz
On October 1, 2026, Muthama met Kalonzo in Lavington, Nairobi, in an encounter that generated widespread speculation about possible political realignments.
The following day, Muthama described Kalonzo as his brother and longtime political friend, explaining that their conversation covered national issues and matters affecting Kenyans.
The former senator subsequently cautioned against speculation, saying that only he and Kalonzo knew the details of their private discussion.
Wiper chairman Jamleck Kamau also confirmed that his party was interested in bringing Muthama back into the opposition fold, while acknowledging that Muthama remained associated with the government at the time.
The meeting was significant because Muthama was once one of Kalonzoโs prominent political allies before their relationship took a different course. He later became the founding chairman of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the party associated with President William Ruto.

His renewed engagement with Kalonzo therefore raises questions about whether old political relationships could be revisited as the next election approaches.
Mutuaโs Place In The Emerging Political Equation
Dr Alfred Mutuaโs political history adds another dimension to the discussion.
Mutua became the first governor of Machakos County in 2013 after winning the election on a Wiper ticket. He later established the Maendeleo Chap Chap movement and pursued a separate political path before joining Rutoโs political camp.
His relationship with Kalonzo and the wider Wiper establishment subsequently became strained, while his political rivalry with Muthama also shaped Machakos politics.
Today, Mutua serves in Rutoโs Cabinet and has publicly advocated dialogue among Ukambani leaders. He has expressed a desire for a bipartisan meeting bringing together Kalonzo, Muthama and other senior regional figures, while also pursuing support for Ruto in Ukambani.

Against that background, Muthamaโs subsequent engagement with Mutua invites a broader question: are the regionโs influential politicians exploring ways to rebuild relationships, or are they maintaining separate channels as they pursue different political objectives?
The available information does not establish that the two men agreed to a common strategy or that their meeting was linked to the earlier Kalonzo encounter.
Could The Former Wiper Allies Reunite In 2027?
A possible political reunion would not necessarily mean that Kalonzo, Muthama and Mutua join the same party or back the same presidential candidate.
It could instead involve renewed dialogue, cooperation on regional interests or an attempt to reduce divisions that have complicated Ukambaniโs political coordination over the years.
For Kalonzo, rebuilding relationships with influential former allies could expand his political engagement beyond his established opposition network.

For Mutua, the challenge would be balancing his position in the Ruto administration with calls for greater cooperation among Ukambani leaders. For Muthama, maintaining relationships across the political divide could give him a role in conversations about the regionโs future, although his intentions remain unclear.
The broader question concerns Ukambaniโs bargaining power. A more coordinated regional leadership could seek common ground on development, representation and national coalition negotiations. Conversely, competing presidential loyalties could keep the regionโs political leadership divided.
Nationally, the meetings come as political actors prepare for negotiations, alliances and possible realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
The Big Question Ahead Of 2027
Are Kalonzo, Muthama and Mutua gradually reopening political channels that could lead to a reunion, or are these simply separate engagements between experienced politicians who know one another well?
For now, the evidence supports asking the question rather than declaring that an alliance exists.
What is clear is that the three men share a political history, have pursued different paths and remain relevant to the contest over Ukambaniโs political direction.
As the 2027 General Election approaches, the significance of their engagements will depend on what follows: further consultations, public declarations, formal alliances or continued political separation.
For Ukambani and the national political landscape, that is the development worth watching.
