The party plans to change its name, constitution, colours, symbol and headquarters as it aligns its political identity with the movement.
The Equitable Party (TEP), led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, has announced plans to rebrand as the Linda Mwananchi Movement, marking a fresh step in its efforts to establish a political platform ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The proposed changes, which include amendments to the party constitution, new official colours and symbol, and relocation of its headquarters, were outlined following a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
The rebranding is intended to align the party’s formal identity with the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which Sifuna and his allies have been building as a broader political formation.
The development follows the unveiling of TEP in Nairobi on October 4, when Sifuna was presented as the party leader and the movement’s presidential candidate for the 2027 contest.
During the launch, Sifuna said the party would provide an electoral vehicle for the movement, signalling that TEP’s existing identity could be temporary.
The proposed transition comes after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties approved the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement name for 90 days, following a decision by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal directing the registrar to reconsider an earlier rejection.
The name reservation, however, does not in itself amount to full registration of a new political party or automatically complete the proposed rebranding.
The planned constitutional amendments and changes to the party’s symbol, colours and headquarters form part of the wider process of establishing the movement’s formal identity.
The rebranding also comes amid preparations by political parties for the 2027 elections, with Sifuna’s camp seeking to consolidate its political organisation under the Linda Mwananchi banner.
Sifuna has described the movement as a platform for advancing accountability, constitutionalism, equal opportunity and leadership focused on the concerns of ordinary Kenyans.
The party’s final transition to the proposed name will depend on the completion of the necessary legal and administrative procedures.
If finalised, the changes would replace The Equitable Party identity with Linda Mwananchi Movement, bringing the party’s formal structure into line with the political brand Sifuna and his allies have promoted.
