The National Police Service (NPS) has announced enhanced security measures across Nairobi ahead of this year’s Saba Saba anniversary, warning that motorists and pedestrians should expect heightened police presence and checkpoints on major roads throughout the city.
In a statement issued on Monday, the NPS said the move was informed by previous experiences during Saba Saba commemorations, where some demonstrations have been accompanied by incidents that disrupted public order, interfered with businesses and inconvenienced residents not participating in the protests.
According to the police, enhanced checkpoints will be mounted at strategic locations across Nairobi to regulate both human and vehicular movement as part of broader efforts to maintain law and order during the commemoration.
The annual Saba Saba observance, marked every July 7, has historically attracted demonstrations by civil society groups, political activists and ordinary citizens calling for constitutional rights, democratic reforms and accountability. In recent years, however, some protests have escalated into confrontations between demonstrators and security agencies, resulting in disruptions to transport, business operations and public services.
The National Police Service urged members of the public to cooperate with officers on duty, comply with lawful instructions and exercise patience as security personnel carry out their mandate.
“We urge all members of the public to obey and cooperate with the National Police Service to ensure that peace and order prevail,” the statement said.

The police also issued a stern warning that anyone found engaging in unlawful acts would face legal action.
“Any unlawful acts shall be met with the full force of the law,” the NPS warned.
The announcement comes as businesses, commuters and residents prepare for a day expected to witness increased security deployment across the capital, with authorities maintaining that the measures are intended to safeguard lives, protect property and ensure the city remains secure during the Saba Saba commemorations.
