A Mwingi court has fined a trailer driver a total of Ksh 20,000 after he was found transporting donkey skins illegally in Mwingi West Constituency.

The driver was nabbed on Monday evening at a police check unit along the Thika–Mwingi–Garissa Highway by detectives from Nguutani Police Station while en route to Kanyonyoo.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate on Tuesday, the court fined him Ksh 10,000 for illegally transporting donkey skins and an additional Ksh 10,000 for operating the vehicle without the required documentation.

The arrest followed the interception of a trailer carrying an estimated 16 tonnes of suspected donkey skins, believed to be more than 3,000 in number.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the source and destination of the consignment, as well as uncover any wider network behind the illegal trade.

The case has intensified concern over the resurgence of illegal donkey slaughter in Kitui County, coming just days after heightened awareness campaigns on donkey welfare in the region.
