The decomposed body of a Meru teacher who went missing late last year has been found hanging from a tree deep inside Nyambene Forest, bringing a tragic end to a months-long search that had kept his family clinging to hope.

Police have identified the remains as those of Fredrick Gitiye, a Biology teacher at Kindani Secondary School in Igembe South Constituency, who disappeared on December 23, 2025, after he was last seen in Maua town.

The grim discovery was made last week by a Kenya Forest Service officer during a routine patrol in the vast forest, where authorities say the body had been at the scene for several months, consistent with the timeline of his disappearance.

According to investigators, the remains were found in an advanced state of decomposition, with some limbs missing and a piece of cloth tied around the neck, raising more questions than answers over the circumstances of his death.

Detectives from Igembe Central Sub-County have since processed the scene and moved the remains to Nyambene Sub-County mortuary for forensic examination and formal identification.

Gitiye was widely known in the region not only as a teacher but also as a vocal critic of Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi, a factor that has now cast a shadow over the case and heightened public interest.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish what exactly transpired between the time of his disappearance and the discovery of his body. However, his family has rejected any premature conclusions, demanding a thorough and transparent probe into his death.

They are now calling on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to take over the case, citing its sensitive nature and the many unanswered questions surrounding the incident.

The discovery has sent shockwaves across the local community, where Gitiye was regarded as both a dedicated educator and an outspoken voice in local political discourse.

As investigators piece together the final moments of his life, his family says it is determined to pursue justice, insisting that the truth behind his disappearance and death must be fully uncovered.
