A middle-aged man from Maandogoi Ward in Ngomeni, Mwingi North Constituency, is nursing gunshot wounds at Mwingi Level 4 Hospital following a violent confrontation involving suspected Somali pastoralists on Friday evening.
According to police sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident occurred at a ranch in Mutanda Village. The sources indicated that tensions flared after a heated confrontation between local residents and the pastoralists over access to pasture, culminating in the shooting.
The victim sustained injuries to the hand and leg and was rushed to hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but security agencies are said to be monitoring the situation closely amid fears of further escalation.
The latest attack comes barely two weeks after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen toured neighbouring Nuu Ward in Mwingi Central Constituency, where he assured residents that the government would deploy more National Police Reservists (NPR) to enhance security in the volatile region.
However, locals are now questioning the effectiveness and speed of the promised interventions as insecurity persists.
The Friday shooting also revives memories of a recent deadly incident in Mwingi North, where one person was killed in a similar conflict.
The killing sparked protests by angry residents who took to the streets, barricaded roads and set a tractor ablaze, accusing security agencies of failing to curb repeated attacks linked to grazing disputes in the area.
Leaders and residents are now calling for urgent and decisive action to prevent further bloodshed, warning that the cycle of violence could spiral if lasting solutions are not implemented.
