As Kenya’s political climate continues to shift and new alliances begin forming ahead of the next election cycle, several familiar names are being mentioned within emerging coalitions.
But quietly appearing in political conversations — especially in Ukambani — is a name that could surprise many: Augustus Kyalo Muli, a man from the land of mangoes, Kitui County.
For decades, Kalonzo Musyoka has been so synonymous with Ukambani politics that most other political figures from the region have struggled to match his influence. Across Machakos County, Kitui County, and Makueni County, Kalonzo’s name has long defined the region’s political direction, often overshadowing emerging leaders.
Many have attempted to rise politically within the region, but most names quickly fade when compared to Kalonzo’s decades-long national presence. But not so with Augustus Muli.
From Obscurity to the Political Spotlight
Until recently, few people outside his home village had heard much about Muli.
That began to change when he was nominated to represent the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition in the panel tasked with selecting commissioners for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
However, that nomination quickly became controversial.
Muli’s name was never gazetted, triggering a prolonged legal and political battle. The dispute — which involved powerful figures within the region — ended up doing something unexpected: it elevated his name into national political conversations.
Ironically, the battle surrounding the IEBC panel nomination did more to build Muli’s political profile than the appointment itself might have done.
So Who Exactly Is Augustus Muli?
That is now the question increasingly being asked across Ukambani.
Muli is the leader of the National Liberal Party (NLP), a political outfit that has been quietly building grassroots structures in different parts of the country.
While he may not yet command the national stature of Kalonzo, his growing political visibility — particularly in Eastern Kenya — is becoming harder to ignore.
The Numbers That Could Change the Conversation
Supporters of the National Liberal Party say the party has now crossed the milestone of one million registered members.
If those numbers translate into actual votes, analysts say the political implications could be significant. In the 2022 Kenyan general election, the presidential contest between William Ruto and Raila Odinga was decided by a margin of just about 200,000 votes.
That narrow difference illustrates how even a relatively small but organized voting bloc could influence the outcome of a national election. For that reason, political observers say anyone dismissing Augustus Muli and his National Liberal Party movement outright may be underestimating a potential emerging political factor.
A Test for Ukambani’s Political Future
For now, Kalonzo Musyoka remains the most dominant political figure in Ukambani, with decades of experience and deep grassroots networks across the region. But politics is rarely static.
As younger leaders emerge and new political movements attempt to organize voters differently, the region could eventually face a defining question: would the community remain loyal to an established political heavyweight, or could it consider a new political alternative?
Whether Augustus Kyalo Muli ultimately becomes a serious political challenger or remains a rising outsider remains to be seen.
What is clear, however, is that his name is increasingly part of the political conversation — and in the evolving dynamics of Ukambani politics, that alone is significant.
