Two students from Tseikuru Senior School have drowned in River Tana during an educational trip in Tseikuru, Mwingi North Constituency, plunging the local community into mourning.

The victims have now been identified as one Form Three student and a Grade 10 learner, who were part of a group of students visiting the river for a school-sanctioned learning exercise when the tragedy occurred.

Detectives from Tseikuru Police Station, working alongside local residents, are combing the banks and downstream sections of River Tana in an ongoing search operation to recover the bodies.

Confirming the incident to Channel 15 News, Tseikuru OCPD Mecha Mogeni said the students were among members of the school’s Agricultural Club who had gone to the river on an educational visit.

“The students drowned while on a learning trip to River Tana. Police investigations and search efforts are ongoing,” OCPD Mogeni stated.

The operation has been complicated by strong currents and the expansive nature of the river, with fears that the bodies may have been swept far away from the point where the incident occurred.

Attempts to get a response from the school administration were unsuccessful, as calls to the school reception seeking to reach the principal went unanswered by press time.

The tragedy has once again sparked debate over student safety during educational trips, particularly when learners are taken to high-risk natural sites.
